Course Description

Presenter: The National Eating Disorders Collaboration

One million Australians have an eating disorder. These serious mental health disorders have complex physical and psychological effects. All health professionals have a role to play in early identification and response to eating disorders, to support the best possible outcomes for their clients and patients.

This introductory session will give attendees the key information that they need to be able to identify and respond to eating disorders within the Osteopath’s role. Attendees will find out more about:

  • The signs and symptoms of different types of eating disorders
  • Tackling common misconceptions
  • Screening and assessment
  • Treatment and the building blocks of recovery
  • The Osteopath’s role in the continuum of care

Learning outcomes include:

  • Understanding of the trans-diagnostic model of eating disorders and its relevance to osteopathic practice and principles
  • Knowledge of key screening tools and how and when to use them
  • Understanding of how to support and work effectively with someone with or at risk of developing an eating disorder
  • Knowledge of key referral pathways

About the presenter:

The National Eating Disorders Collaboration (NEDC) is an initiative of the Federal Department of Health. Its purpose is to develop a nationally consistent, evidence-based approach to the prevention and management of eating disorders in Australia. The NEDC vision is that:

  • Eating disorders are a priority mainstream health issue in Australia
  • A healthy, diverse and inclusive Australian society acts to prevent eating disorders, and
  • Every Australian at risk should have access to an effective continuum of eating disorders prevention, care and ongoing recovery support.

The NEDC works collaboratively with clinicians, academics and people with lived experience to develop eating disorders knowledge, to promote evidence based information and to develop and promote consistent national standards.
