Federal Election 2022

The 2022 Federal Election, which is to be held on 21 May, is an opportunity for Osteopathy Australia members and their supporters to let political candidates know about the issues facing osteopaths and their patients. You may like to write to candidates about the issues that matter to you, or go along to a community meeting with candidates to raise your concerns - or maybe you just want to be prepared for a discussion with candidates if they stop you in the street or come knocking on your door. You may find the prospect of reaching out to your local member or candidates to raise these issues a bit daunting and you can probably convince yourself that it wouldn’t make a difference anyway! But that is precisely why we need your involvement in this campaign! As a relatively small profession, osteopathy can often be overlooked in policy discussions in the health, care and support sectors, so it is vitally important that we all make an effort to keep osteopathy on the radar of politicians.

Osteopathy Australia’s Election Statement outlines some key issues you may wish to raise with your local electoral candidates:

  1. Better Healthcare. Integration of osteopathy into all health, care and support sectors
  2. Better Access. Funding reform to support better and fairer consumer access to allied health
  3. Better Support. Strengthening of the allied health workforce, including incentives to work in rural/remote areas
  4. Better Evidence. Funding for research into effective osteopathic treatments and building the evidence base
  5. Better Understanding. Improved consultation processes to ensure the voices of allied health professions and consumers of their healthcare are heard and taken seriously by Government

You are of course also encouraged to raise any other matters of concern with your local candidates, but please remember that this is a federal election, so make sure the issues you raise are not local or state issues but fall under the responsibility of the Federal Government.

Many of the issues Osteopathy Australia has identified as areas of concern in the upcoming election also impact similarly on other allied health professions, so we fully support getting behind AHPA’s 'Fair Access to Allied Health for All' election campaign. However, we’d also like your assistance in ensuring that the issues that matter most to osteopaths get the attention they need.
