Advocacy priorities

Osteopathy Australia's advocacy focuses on promoting the role of osteopaths within the broader healthcare system. The goal is to enhance the visibility, credibility, and integration of osteopathy in Australia’s health system.

Below are some of the key advocacy projects that the team has been focusing on.

Disability and the NDIS

We have and will continue to advocate on your behalf for osteopathy to be formally recognised as a profession that can provide therapy supports and for an individual line item under the NDIS.

Aged Care

As the Australian population ages at rapid rate we wish to ensure that osteopaths can continue to provide care to older Australians.

A key focus of our advocacy work in the aged care space is to have osteopathy classified under the appropriate ‘allied health and therapy’ service type.

Medicare and Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA)

We continue to advocate for better recognition and sustainable fees in both the Medicare and DVA schemes.

We are currently advocating for the expansion of the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) program, and diagnostic imaging referral rights and for direct referral rights.

University courses

To help grow and safeguard the profession we are continuing to peruse opportunities to establish new osteopathy courses nationally.

Government relations

We are actively working to build connections and relationships with key governmental stakeholders such as ministers for parliament and senators, who can help support our work and represent us at a governmental level.

Compensation schemes

We continue to lobby workers compensation and traffic accident schemes for better recognition of osteopathy and fair and equal remuneration for services.
