This hands-on and highly engaging workshop will allow participants to:
- Study a systematic approach to accurate subjective and objective assessment of the shoulder
- Learn how to recognise and efficiently manage a variety of common shoulder dysfunctions
- Practice the application of highly effective manual treatment techniques specifically related to the restoration of shoulder mobility
- Review the essential functional integrated anatomy and biomechanics of the region
- Practice a spectrum of shoulder rehabilitation exercises specifically related to the restoration of optimal biomechanics and functional strength
On completing the course, participants should be able to:
- Establish treatment goals and priorities with an efficient subjective assessment
- Analyse specific reported symptoms to direct the subsequent objective assessment
- Recognise the Bio-Psycho-Social factors that will influence a clients shoulder dysfunctions
- Perform a selection of essential range of motion and functional movement tests
- Accurately assess (and record) shoulder joint motion and determine what tests and objective measurements are most relevant
- Assess upper limb neural tension and establish a meaningful score / objective measurement to monitor changes in neural tension in response to manual therapy.
- Apply specific manual therapy techniques to effectively improve upper limb neutral tension
- Assess the cervical and thoracic spine and appreciate the implications of spinal involvement in upper limb pain, restriction and dysfunction
- Question the value of classic orthopaedic tests, and determine which tests are actually relevant and which tests have limited value
- Consider the value of moving away from classic patho-anotomical labels as workable diagnoses
- Assess scapulae dyskineses & recognise the muscle imbalances that drive the common dyskineses
- Successfully utilise the scapula reposition test and appreciate how it influences treatment choices
- Perform soft tissue palpation and soft tissue release techniques for the muscles influencing scapula position and general gleno-humeral mobility
- Establish a systematic approach to strengthening the region, including exercises focussing on restoring scapula control and improving general upper limb strength
- Perform and teach an extensive spectrum of shoulder rehabilitation exercises
Your workshop facilitator:
Wayne Rodgers is a sports and exercise physiotherapist, functional strength coach and highly experienced course presenter with over 30 years of clinical experience. He has been a sports physiotherapist for several national and international sports teams including the Australian Netball team and the Australian Commonwealth Games team.
Wayne has a special interest in the management of shoulder dysfunctions and in the effective utilisation of functional strength training within physiotherapy clinics and exercise businesses. When designing and delivering professional development courses, Wayne has a strong focus on providing evidence-based, highly systematic approaches to assessment and client management - with a significant component of all his courses dedicated to the acquisition and mastery of practical skills.
His current professional roles include: running a successful sports physiotherapy clinic and functional strength coaching facility on the Sunshine Coast, contributing to the Masters in Sports Medicine program at Melbourne University, developing online education and training programs and delivering up to 20 physiotherapy and exercise professional courses per year.
