Use of PROMS in clinical practice

Understanding patients’ responses to treatment can enhance osteopathic care. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are questionnaires that allow patients to report on their perceptions of health status in response to treatment. PROMs are typically used to measure changes in symptoms, daily function or quality of life in response to treatment, and are completed by patients on two or more occasions so that comparisons can be made. In manual therapies, PROMs are commonly used to measure patients’ self-reported responses to treatments for musculoskeletal conditions. 

This webinar discusses the use of PROMS in clinical practice and their role in measuring patient responses for both musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal conditions. It draws attention to the potential for the use of PROMs to quantify responses to osteopathic care for patients with chronic respiratory conditions who are likely to present to osteopaths. Using PROMs in this way could help determine whether osteopathic care has a role to play as a non-pharmacological adjunct to standard medical care for patients with chronic respiratory conditions.
