In Australia, osteoporosis and osteopenia affect up to 30% of patients aged over 75, more commonly women. This progressive loss of bone mineral density is attributable to numerous dietary, lifestyle, hormonal and general health factors. Key to the effective management of bone health is muscular health. There are critical interactions at play between muscles and bones that help ensure long-term skeletal integrity. Unfortunately, Australians also suffer significant muscular issues, with some studies indicating up to 97% of the adult population experience muscular aches, pains, ramps, or other related complaints at some stage. Nearly two-thirds (62%) of Australians have indicated that muscular pain decreases their quality of life. Fortunately, there are many recommendations that can be made to patients to improve muscular health and slow the bone demineralisation process – studies have even shown it may even be possible to help patients rebuild lost bone with the right combination of dietary change, lifestyle advice, and supplements. This webinar will review some recommendations that could be made clinically, alongside appropriate osteopathic treatment, to support long term patient musculoskeletal health.
